Emergency Paediatric First Aid FAQs

Who is Emergency Paediatric First Aid training suitable for?

FGH Training recommends this course for employees who care for or supervise babies and children, including those working in:

  • Nurseries and pre-schools
  • Schools and after-school clubs
  • Holiday and activity clubs
  • Leisure and community organisations
  • Sports and event settings
  • Voluntary organisations

It may also be useful for employees who support children occasionally but do not hold primary responsibility for a setting’s full paediatric first aid provision.

The course prepares employees to provide immediate assistance when a baby or child becomes seriously ill or injured. This can improve your emergency arrangements, provide additional first aid cover and give employees greater confidence when responsible for children.

The qualification is designed to meet the criteria for an emergency paediatric first aid course within the Early Years Foundation Stage framework in England.

However, the EYFS also requires at least one person with a current certificate from a full Paediatric First Aid course to be available whenever children are present and to accompany them on outings. Emergency Paediatric First Aid should not be treated as a replacement for this full-course requirement. Organisations should review the current EYFS framework before deciding which employees and courses they need.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a one-day course focused on immediate, life-threatening emergencies involving babies and children.

The full Paediatric First Aid qualification is delivered over two days and covers a broader range of childhood injuries, illnesses and medical conditions. It is more suitable for employees with greater responsibility and settings that need full EYFS paediatric first aid cover.

The qualification is valid for three years. Learners must complete the course again before their certificate expires to remain qualified. Organisations should monitor certificate expiry dates to prevent gaps in their paediatric first aid arrangements.

Not necessarily. Emergency Paediatric First Aid focuses on babies and children, while Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work mainly address emergencies involving adults.

Organisations responsible for both children and employees may need a combination of qualifications. Your workplace first aid needs assessment should identify the appropriate training.

Yes. FGH Training can deliver a private Emergency Paediatric First Aid course at your workplace or another venue that can suitably host the practical training and assessments. Alternatively, training can be arranged at one of our classrooms.
